Sliding Liberia

Sliding Liberia is a film that crosses genres. Conceived of by Stanford filmmaker Britton Caillouette and Stanford PhD student Nicholai Lidow, this surf film/social documentary follows a group of young surfers to Liberia in search of more than perfect waves. As they travel through the West African country, devastated by decades of brutal civil war, they record the stories of people they meet along the way – people like Alfred, a young boy who became Liberia’s first surfer after finding a bodyboard while fleeing from rebels. Besides rediscovering a world-class point break that could be the best-kept secret in the surfing world, the surfers find something much more important – a way to travel responsibly in the 21st century. Featuring Surfers: Dan Malloy, Crystal Thornburg, and Chris Del Moro. Cinematography by: Dave Homcy.

DVD In Stores August 1st.

Sliding Liberia :: Patagonia

The Patagoonies in Palo Alto are got revved up for an extra-special event this past weekend. They were proud to announce that directors, Stanford University students, and friends of Patagonia, Nicholai Lidow and Britt Caillouette, introduced the surf documentary Sliding Liberia at 7 pm on Saturday, June 7, in their shop on Alma Street. The film features the sick surf skills of Crystal Thornburg and Dan Malloy, both Patagonia Surf Ambassadors, as well as Chris Del Moro, an artist whose work is featured on their surf tees, and, most notably, the epic beauty of West African coastal beaches. Central to the message of the film is not the role of surfing in the lives of traveling Americans, but the soul-liberating role the sport can have in the lives of those so greatly affected by civil war in Liberia.

“The Bad Boy of Cuisine”

Anthony BourdainDubbed “the bad boy of cuisine” for his rock-star look and blunt observations about the world of restaurants, chefs and cooking, Anthony Bourdain is not your typical celebrity chef. Bourdain has been known for being an unrepentant drinker and smoker. Adding to his untamed image, Bourdain is a former user of cocaine, heroin, poppers, and LSD. A 28-year veteran of professional kitchens, Bourdain is the Chef-at-Large at New York’s famed bistro, Les Halles. His exposé of New York restaurants attracted huge attention in the U.S.A. and the U.K. It formed the basis of his critically acclaimed 2001 book, Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly, which described in lurid detail his experiences in kitchens and became a surprise international best-seller.

Tony’s quest for the perfect dining experience was then smartly documented in his own television series: No Reservations. In No Reservations, Tony’s journey takes him to people and places far beyond the realm of food. Following his wanderlust, the show has taken the audience to far-out and familiar places, from Iceland to Vietnam and the Greek Islands to Indonesia. Having known about Bourdain for quite some time now, I thought I’d educate all the rookies who are unaware of his legendary lifestyle. Check out Bourdain on the Travel Channel as he travels around the world seeking the authentic experiences and food that flavor the world’s cultures.
